Aesthetics qualifications have emerged as the new big player within the beauty and aesthetics industry. Until recently, there were no formal qualifications specifically dedicated to aesthetics, leaving a gap in standardized education and training for practitioners. However, this is changing rapidly with the introduction of structured qualifications that align with industry standards.
Although mandatory training requirements for aesthetics practitioners have not yet been enforced, significant progress has been made in establishing a robust framework for qualifications. In 2020, the National Occupational Standards (NOS) were approved, setting a benchmark for the skills and knowledge required in the field. Further NOS were developed in April 2021 by Skills Active and the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority (Habia), in collaboration with key stakeholders, including employers and professional and industry bodies.
The NOS framework forms the foundation for qualifications regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). This ensures that the qualifications are not only comprehensive but also meet the high standards expected within the industry. The current aesthetics qualifications at levels four, five, and seven in aesthetics practice have been meticulously mapped to these NOS standards, ensuring they meet all relevant requirements.
The NOS were developed to provide a clear framework for the competencies required in aesthetics. These standards cover a range of essential skills and knowledge areas, including:
By aligning aesthetics qualifications with these NOS, training providers ensure that their courses are comprehensive and relevant to the industry's needs.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AWARDING BODY AND A TRAINING PROVIDER!
The advent of formal aesthetics qualifications marks a significant advancement in the beauty and aesthetics industry. These qualifications, aligned with the National Occupational Standards, provide a standardized, credible, and rigorous education framework for practitioners.
As the industry evolves and moves towards more stringent regulations, these qualifications will play a crucial role in ensuring that practitioners are knowledgeable, competent, and prepared for the future. Investing in aesthetics qualifications now not only enhances professional credibility and career prospects but also ensures the highest standards of safety and quality for clients.
